Jessica’s Meet Cute (in her own words):
Ok, so here’s my meet cute. Back in 2002, I was at a friend’s birthday party and I heard about a Halloween party that was a few nights later. I was not invited to this Halloween party, but I REALLY wanted to go (which is odd for an introvert like me but I had a feeling and I went with it). So, I asked the friend if she could finagle an invitation for me. She did. I spent the next 2 days assembling a witch costume and psyching myself up to go to a party of strangers. When I arrived, I got a drink, and started mingling. Determined not to be a wallflower (my normal pathological move) I circulated and saw a long line. I made my way over to it. Not wanting to queue up just for any old thing, I asked the cutest boy on line if it was, in fact, the line to the bathroom. It was. He let me cut in. We started talking. It was a very long line and he was a very cute boy. I found out he had also technically not been invited to the party. Hadn’t even wanted to come and had been dragged there by friends. We talked for 7 hours…7 hours, 22 years and counting.
I think about that night a lot. It’s filled with innocuous choices that forever changed our lives — choices that brought us to a moment. Like the choice to talk to that boy and for him to talk to me. The choice to go to the party in the first place (or in his case to let himself be dragged to it.) Hell, even the choice to be friends with the friends responsible for us being there. And, because of all these choices, we found ourselves in this moment. The moment that started a path from two…to one…
Meet Cute in the CCU is a short film that looks at that moment — the small hopeful moment when everything changes. In the film, Sophia, is rushing from a sci-fi convention, in full cosplay no less, to see her father before he has emergency heart surgery. Emilio waits for his beloved uncle to have scheduled surgery. They meet in the waiting room. They start to talk. They have a moment. They have the moment. And their lives will never be the same again.
